🤖 AI Overview

What happened: John Healey, the new UK Chancellor, is set to abolish standing charges on gas bills for 23 million homes, saving households an average of £45 a year. This move is part of his first budget statement, scheduled for Wednesday, which aims to inject hope into the economy while adhering to fiscal rules. Healey has also announced the creation of an Energy Wealth Fund, diverting £2bn from the National Wealth Fund.

Market impact: The energy sector, particularly gas suppliers, may face pressure due to the removal of standing charges. This could lead to a shift in their business models and potentially impact their financial performance. Households, particularly those in the 'squeezed middle', may see some relief from this policy, potentially boosting consumer spending and benefiting retail and services sectors.

What to watch next: The specifics of Healey's budget, due on Wednesday, will provide clarity on further fiscal measures and their potential market impact. Additionally, the reaction of energy companies to the standing charge abolition and any potential regulatory changes will be crucial to monitor.
