Italy’s Eni has announced two new offshore natural gas discoveries in Libya, potentially strengthening supplies to both the domestic market and Europe.

The discoveries were made during a recent exploration campaign targeting two adjacent structures, Bahr Essalam South 2 (BESS 2) and Bahr Essalam South 3 (BESS 3). The B2-16/4 and C1-16/4 wells, drilled roughly 85 km offshore in about 650 feet of water, encountered gas-bearing intervals in the Metlaoui Formation, the region’s main producing reservoir.

Preliminary estimates suggest the two structures together contain more than 1 trillion cubic feet of gas in place. Early test results from the first well confirmed strong reservoir quality and productive capacity.

The finds lie about 16 km south of the Bahr Essalam Gas Field, Libya’s largest offshore gas field, which has been operating since 2005. Their proximity to existing infrastructure could allow for relatively rapid development, with the new resources expected to be tied back to current offshore facilities.

Once developed, the gas will help supply Libya’s domestic market while also supporting exports to Italy, where Libyan gas remains an important component of Mediterranean energy flows.

Eni has operated in Libya since 1959 and remains the country’s leading international energy company. In 2025, the firm reported equity production of about 162,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in the country. The company is currently advancing three development projects in Libya, two of which are scheduled to begin production in 2026.

The latest discoveries highlight Libya’s continued potential as a key gas supplier in the Mediterranean region, particularly as European markets seek diversified sources of energy supply.
