OpenAI (Unlisted:OPAI) has announced a $110 billion funding round, pushing the company’s pre-money valuation to $730 billion, up from $500 billion in a secondary financing last October.
The round includes $50 billion from <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/AMZN">Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN)</a>, $30 billion from <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/NVDA">Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, XETRA:NVD)</a>, and $30 billion from SoftBank, with additional investors expected to join.
The ChatGPT-owner said the capital will support infrastructure expansion, global distribution, and the development of new AI products, including its enterprise platform Frontier.
As part of the funding, OpenAI and Amazon announced a multiyear strategic partnership. Under the agreement, the companies will develop customized models for Amazon’s customer-facing applications. Amazon Web Services (AWS) will serve as the exclusive third-party cloud provider for Frontier.
OpenAI said Amazon’s $50 billion investment will start with $15 billion upfront, with the remaining $35 billion to follow under certain conditions.
OpenAI is also expanding its collaboration with NVIDIA to include dedicated inference and training capacity for its AI models, building on systems already deployed across Microsoft, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and CoreWeave.
OpenAI said the funding will also increase the value of the OpenAI Foundation’s stake in the company to over $180 billion, expanding its capacity to support philanthropic initiatives, including AI safety and health research.
OpenAI noted that the funding round does not change its ongoing partnership with <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/MSFT">Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT)</a>, which has been a major investor since 2019, and noted that Microsoft retains the option to participate in the current round.
Along with the announcement, the company highlighted strong usage growth across its products. ChatGPT has more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million consumer subscribers, while weekly users of Codex, its AI coding tool, have more than tripled this year to 1.6 million. More than 9 million businesses now use ChatGPT for work-related tasks, according to the company.
