🤖 AI Overview

What happened: Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods on Tuesday, ranging from 15% to 50%, after trade talks collapsed. The duties target a wide range of products, including steel, furniture, and dairy. This move follows Canada's promise to match U.S. tariffs "dollar for dollar" after failed trade deal negotiations.

Market impact: U.S. companies exporting targeted goods to Canada will face increased costs, potentially leading to reduced profitability or price hikes for Canadian consumers. The Canadian dollar may weaken due to trade uncertainty. U.S. steel and aluminum producers could see increased competition from imported products.

What to watch next: The U.S. response to Canada's tariffs, which could escalate the trade dispute; Canadian economic data releases, such as GDP and inflation, for signs of trade war impact; and any progress in NAFTA renegotiations, which could ease trade tensions.
